How M-Pesa subscription billing works on Rudia
Rudia subscriptions are not a standing authorisation to debit your account. There is no card on file, and no permission that lets Rudia or a merchant charge you without your involvement. Every single charge — the first one and every renewal after it — sends an M-Pesa STK push to your phone, and nothing is collected until you enter your own M-Pesa PIN to approve it.
On your renewal date, the merchant's subscription is due for its next cycle. Rudia's system triggers a payment request through Safaricom's Daraja API, which lands on your phone as the familiar 'Enter M-Pesa PIN to complete this payment' prompt, showing the amount and the paybill. If you don't approve it, nothing is charged — the request simply times out.
Before that happens, you get a reminder by SMS ahead of the charge (timing depends on whether the subscription is weekly or monthly), so a renewal is never a surprise on your statement. If a payment fails — wrong PIN, insufficient balance, or you just don't respond — the order is not silently retried on a loop; you get a clear message about what happened and a way to try again or use the paybill directly.
If a renewal genuinely goes unpaid past a short grace period, the subscription pauses rather than accumulating a debt you didn't agree to. You can resume it at any time by paying the next cycle the same way — an M-Pesa prompt you approve yourself.
This is the whole model in one sentence: you approve every payment with your own M-Pesa PIN. Rudia can request a charge; it can never complete one without you.
Common questions
- Will Rudia ever charge my M-Pesa without asking?
- No. Every charge — including subscription renewals — requires you to enter your M-Pesa PIN on an STK push prompt sent to your phone. There is no standing authorisation.
- What happens if I miss a renewal payment?
- You get a short grace period to pay before the subscription pauses. Nothing is charged automatically after the grace period — you resume it yourself when you're ready.
- Can I see the amount before I approve it?
- Yes — the STK push prompt on your phone shows the exact amount and the paybill before you enter your PIN.
